Summer Solstice Ride
Friday, 21 June 2013, 00:01
Due to changes in plans we are now going to join the LCC ride,
Friday 21 June 2013 is the longest day of the year, and since time immemorial people of all faiths and none have marked the occasion of the summer solstice by rising to greet the dawn. London cyclists do this in their own special way, by riding through the night from Greenwich to Primrose Hill, following a tradition established by the late great Barry Mason.
This year's Midsummer Madness ride will follow a familiar but never entirely predictable pattern, with the early risers setting off from Cutty Sark Gardens in Greenwich at 02:00 on the morning of the solstice. We then stop at Southwark Needle by London Bridge to collect more riders.
Previous years have seen hundreds of London cyclists foregoing their beauty sleep, giddy with excitement at the prospect of experiencing the rise of the midsummer sun. Overcast skies and rain are no deterrent, for Midsummer Madness is a community happening, fun whatever the weather.
02:00 Set off from Cutty Sark Gardens, SE10 9LW
02:30 Collect more riders at Southwark Needle, SE1 2SY
03:00 Stop for coffee and a chat at Bar Italia in Soho
04:30 Reach the top of Primrose Hill
04:40 Sunrise!
Following the sunrise some will cycle back across the river for breakfast in a Southwark caf, before heading for work or home to sleep. Others will hang around Primrose Hill or do their own thing, with all bidding a fond farewell to friends old and new, promising to return next year for more of the same.
The Midsummer Madness cycle ride is brought to you by the Dog & Bell Crew: an informal collective of southeast London-based social cycle ride planners and members of the London Cycling Campaign. This year's ride leader is science journalist and fixed-wheel cycling evangelist Francis Sedgemore.
There are no rules other than those of the road, good sense and common courtesy.

Join us tonight for a ride to The Rye, Peckham.
Bromley to Dover ride
Saturday, 29 June 2013, 08:30 @ Bromley South Station
Today's ride will – for the most part be on country lanes , with some very limited use of A & B roads . Overall distance will be at least 80 miles and there are likely to be quite a few hills to surmount en route !!
One might think that Dover is a tad too far ...and well it might be ! But I am going to give it my all and we should get there in plenty of time before darkness falls
We'll find somewhere for a lunch stop – and we will be keeping up a steady and determined pace , not particularly fast ....because my rides never are .....I would guess that Dover would be reached by 19:00 approximately .
Once in Dover we'll probably get something to eat ...and maybe a pint or two – then board a train back to Bromley South ...possibly catching up on our sleep en route back !
If you managed to do a Brighton ride ...then come and add this ride to your trophy belt as well ...it's certainly quite a bit tougher!
Group save singles should be about £14 each back to Bromley (on the 4 for 2 offer )

This is a totally unsupported ride, although there is a stop around half way where food and drink can be found.
Some of Bromley Cyclists will probably be going, although this is not a led ride, you just set off at around 8pm and arrive at Dunwich sometime in the morning. Last time we did it, it took approximately 11 hours with stops.
Not particularly hilly, quite tiring and you will need to arrange your own transport home. Southwark Cyclists usually put on coaches for the return journey and lorries to return the bikes. You will need to book these well in advance via Southwark Cyclists.

Folkstone to Dungeness
Sunday, 11 August 2013,
Details to follow. Ride leader Steve Watkin.
Meet Orpington station TIME TBC for a return train to Folkestone. Cost if we buy Group Save in multiples of 4 is about £11.
The ride will take us along the way of the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway route to Dungeness. With a bit of luck the lighthouse will be open, well worth a visit!
Dungeness is a place of contrasts with lots of small “shack” type homes and a nuclear power station in the background, it’s really unique.
It’s also got more shingle than any other place I’ve ever been to !
The return ride will take us inland a little more to see the varying terrain of the Romney flats. Generally not too many hills but often some wind to make up for the lack of undulations.
Definitely an all day ride at around 60 miles. But as usual no-one will be left behind and of course we will be on the look out for Coffee / tea and cakes on route. Pub lunch or bring your own.

There is nothing to see whilst the parade is occurring so this is an opportunity to buy a coffee before returning to the Mall to watch the return to the Palace and the fly past which happens at 1pm
This is Bike Week so we will find a bike week event to visit, probably in Hackney, when there will be an opportunity to have lunch. We shall return to Bromley via the cable car crossing or the foot tunnel for about 4.30pm. More information
