The Stables

Nine of us as we set off from Bromley South, our ride leader for the first time tonight was Tim. At least the rain had stopped as we cycled down Widmore Road and then took a left across to Mottingham and around the back streets of Welling.

Our destination tonight was The Stables at Danson Park and good route planning by Tim ensured that we avoided many of the busy roads and made use of cycle paths where possible. A grade 2 star listed building, built in the 1700’s, The Stables was originally a stable block belonging to the mansion house in the park,

We arrived at just after eight thirty and were looking forward to some of the many cask beers on offer, including the ever popular Doombar. Imagine the disappointment when all the beers were off apart from a couple of bottled lagers. This was just too much for some, especially ‘Sticky’, who insisted that his rather dubious looking lager at least be put in a glass.

This was a shame as Tim had taken the trouble to visit the venue the previous Monday, when he had been assured all the beer would be back on by Wednesday. No explanation was given, so we adjourned to our seats, rather disgruntled. At least there were numerous spare seats, but then that was hardly surprising.

Some of us thought about ordering some food, but this idea was very soon dismissed when we were told ‘food finished at 8.pm’. OK, let’s get some crisps then – they had run out of crisps as well.

Very well done to Tim for organizing and leading tonight’s ride, shame about the venue, but no fault of Tim’s.
