Wednesday Weekly Wander
Wednesday, 01 February 2012 @ Bromley South station forecourt

Join us for a ride tonight, before ending at The Bricklayers Arms, Bromley Common for a get together and a few drinks.

Tonbridge to Penshurst
Sunday, 29 January 2012 @ Orpington Station - bus turn around side

We will catch the 10.32 train to Tonbridge for the start of this leisurely ride.  If you prefer to take your bike by car then park in the car park outside Tonbridge Swimming Pool (bottom car park) and I will meet you there at around 11.15.

From here we will ride through the sportsground and into Haysden Country Park, around Barden Lake where we can stop to feed the ducks and then out onto the road for about a mile before picking up the traffic free route through the woods to just outside Penshurst.   Then comes the only hill on the way there, but we will be stopping at regular intervals to take in the views, which are outstanding.  It's not a bad hill, just a bit long - walk if necessary, no problem.

At the top of the hill you will be able to see spectacular views of the Weald before we drop down into Penshurst Place and then across the road to the Leicester Arms for lunch, drink or whatever you want to do.  Alternatively we can visit the Tea Rooms, the choice is yours. 7 miles to this point.

The fastest we will go at any point would be 10mph, although I fully expect to go slower, so if you are looking for a long, fast ride this is not for you, although anyone is welcome to join us.  The complete ride will be no longer than 14 miles.

This ride would be a good opportunity for you to bring along a partner/wife/husband who does not normally ride far but would like to start cycling further, older children are welcome as long as they are competent on the road and accompanied by a parent. if in doubt please email me first. eve.evans10@btinternet.com

I expect to get the train back around 3.00pm so you shouldn't need lights, although it never hurts to bring them just in case.   Please bring a spare inner tube and make sure your tyres have some air in them before you leave home.  The return train fare is around £7.50, although we should be able to get a group saver if there are enough of us.

Terrain:  90% traffic free paths through parks and woodland.  The paths are usually quite firm although there may be a little mud through the woods, I've never known it that bad though.

This is a lovely ride with some beautiful scenery and if you haven't done it before, I would highly recommend it.

Olympic ride (All day ride)
Sunday, 29 January 2012

Meet outside Evans Bike Shop by London Bridge Station at 0945 for a 1000 sharp departure.

Where we'll view the Olympic Park to watch the progress. New to this ride will be a Woolwich barracks diversion to see the site of the shooting. It's largely traffic-free and you'll get some great riverside views.

Back about 1600 ish

Circuit of London
Sunday, 22 January 2012

Description

Where: Jubilee Greenway
When: Sunday 22 January 2012 @ 10:00
Meet: Cutty Sark Gardens, SE10 9LW (by entrance to foot tunnel)

Join Greenwich Cyclists for a 65-ish kilometre circuit of London following the Thames Path and some of the city’s other waterways. I led this ride in November, and much of it was enveloped in thick fog. Maybe this time around we shall get to see beyond the ends of our noses.

From Greenwich we head west along the Thames Path into central London, crossing the river at Lambeth Bridge. We then cycle northeast up Millbank through St Stephens, passing the Mother Of All Parliaments (™ UK plc), before heading past St James’ Park. From there it’s along the Mall to Brenda’s Gaff, and up Constitution Hill to Hyde Park Corner.

After terrorising the pedestrians on Hyde Park's Rotten Row, we exit the park by Kensington Palace, and make our way towards the Grand Union Canal at Little Venice. From there it’s onto and along the Regents Canal through Camden. We stay on the Regents Canal all the way to Victoria Park in Hackney, following which we join the River Lea Navigation for a short stretch to the entrance to the Greenway path near the Olympic stadium.

From the Olympic park we head east, following the line of the Northern Outfall Sewer (the whiff is barely detectable) through Stratford, Plaistow and Newham. At Beckton we leave the Greenway, cross the A13, and cycle through Beckton Park towards the Royal Albert Dock. After crossing the Albert Dock Basin, we head south, and cross the river using the free ferry to Woolwich. From Woolwich, the final 10 kilometre spin runs along the Thames Path back to Cutty Sark Gardens.

Much of the ride is on canal towpaths shared with quadrupedal lifeforms and their accompanying two-legged bondservants, whose behaviour is not entirely predictable. On shared use paths, such pavement beasts have right of way, and should not be harassed into making way for cyclists. Gentle pings of the bell to warn of one’s approach are advised.

Other than that, the ride is fairly long, so bring plenty of water and snacks to keep you going. Also lights, puncture repair materials, and preferably a spare inner tube. Also ensure that your brakes are fully functional. Taking an early bath in the Regents Canal is I’m told not a particularly pleasant experience. Especially at this time of year.

Sustrans/Time Out Photography Competiton
Sunday, 20 November 2011

Sustrans is thrilled to be working in partnership with Time Out on a photography competition calling on Londoners and visitors to London to send us images they have which best sum up the journeys they make and the places they travel through! We thought that LCC local groups would be very keen to take part!

Time Out - Capturing the Capital

Sustrans - Capturing the Capital

The places we take in as part of our everyday lives have a huge impact on our quality of life. For some the morning commute is an absolute joy whilst for others, the school run might ruin their day. Show us how you feel on your journeys. We want to see it all: the good, the bad, the incredible, and the downright ugly. The deadline is quite soon though – Friday 25th November!

With mayoral elections around the corner here in the capital this is a great time for us to capture in photographs what London means to you. In our manifesto for the elections we call for a greater-Greater London and you can help us to better understand what that means (or what it doesn’t mean for that matter!).

Please forward details of the competition to anyone you think might be interested and please feel free to put into your own mailings, newsletters etc.

Meet at St Mark's Church, The Oval, Kennington, SE11 4PW at 10.30AM for a prompt departure.

You'll see we will double back and forth across the city and the river Thames in order to visit all of the dangerous junctions. The ride takes place at the same time as the Lord Mayor's Show meaning much of the City will be closed; as such it is not possible to cross Blackfriars Bridge to visit Bank junction (one of the 10 on the list), but we will visit King's Cross where young cyclist Min Joo Lee was recently killed.

We'll be stopping for a little tea break on Hyde Park Corner roundabout around 12.15 (bring some refreshments to keep yourself going!) and will end at Look Mum No Hands! bicycle cafe on Old Street (map) for coffee an hour or two after that. We're praying for good weather, but pack your lights and your waterproofs just in case.

Otford to Eynsford
Saturday, 12 November 2011 @ Bromley South Station Forecourt

Meet Andrew Fergar to catch the 10:44 direct service to Otford ( ETA 11:07 )
Or Trevor Hughes at Catford Station ( not Catford Bridge ) at 10:15 for the 10:33 direct service to Otford
Today's ride will take in parts of the Pilgrims Way and then a varied selection of lanes , passing through such places as Luddesdown and Hodsoll Street ...there probably won't be much traffic and there will be lots of rural vistas to see from atop the hills . Overall we'll try for a 10mph average , but it might be a bit slower – due to the "lumpy" nature of the terrain in this area . A break is contemplated at Speedgate ( near Fawkham ) – for tea / sandwiches .
We would hope to finish our 35 mile ( approx ) ride in time to catch the 15:08 train from Eynsford .

Lee Valley – All day ride
Saturday, 12 November 2011

Meet at Sidcup Station for the 8.40 Train to Greenwich or Greenwich Station at 10am.
This ride will be suitable most types of bikes, and will mostly be following the un-surfaced canal tow paths.
From Greenwich we will stroll through the foot tunnel to the Isle of Dogs, from here we will head up through Mile End (the roads here will be fairly busy) towards Victoria Park where we will join the canal. The ride will the follow the canal up through the Lee Valley towards Hertford, depending on how far we go will be determined by the group and weather conditions. We will then follow the same route home. There will be occasional stops for coffee and cake along the way.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us in advance.

Orpington to Eynsford
Sunday, 06 November 2011

This will be a quick ride to Eynsford and back with a tea stop at Lullingstone if we have time, back by 11.30am.

Charing Challenge
Saturday, 05 November 2011 @ Bromley South Station Forecourt

We will be catching the 08:53 direct service to Charing ( this train starts at London Victoria at 08:37 ) Please buy return tickets to Charing .

Today's ride would be a suitable one for folk that have got used to covering 30 miles or so and want to try something a little more challenging . The overall distance will be around 45 miles and has 530 metres of ascent/descent includes a pub stop in Laddingford : http://www.chequersladdingford.co.uk/
Today's ride will actually be fairly flat – only one ascent is of any note ( and it is a biggie ) as we cross the North Downs ridge in order to get to Otford , which offers frequent trains back to Bromley & London . Having done something very similar a couple of months back I'm fairly confident that you will enjoy a ride that offers many splendid views of the Kentish countryside ...without , for the most part , the hills that are such a marked feature of Kentish topography .
I would hope to be back at Charing by 1600/1630 approx – but please bring lights , as darkness will fall all too early now .

The Metropolitan Masonic Cyberknife Appeal Charity Ride
Friday, 14 October 2011

London Masons (Metropolitan Grand Lodge) have set up an appeal to raise £3 million, to purchase a CyberKnife for Bart’s Cancer Centre at St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

The CyberKnife is a robotic radiosurgery system, used for treating tumours and other medical conditions, which allows the energy to be directed at any part of the body from any direction, delivering radiotherapy, with the intention of targeting treatment more accurately than standard radiotherapy. This machine will be available, according to clinical need.

To support this appeal Stuart Curtis a member of Bromley Cyclists plans to cycle from Bromley to Battle Abbey (Senlac Hill) then onto Hastings and then round the Kent coast via the ancient Saxon shoreline to Westminster Abbey.

The ride will start on 14th October 2011 – the 945 anniversary of the Battle of Hastings – and will last well over 200 miles.

An added difficulty in achieving this ride is that Stuart is partially sighted, having been born with congenital cataracts and has a visual acuity of 6/60 – with an effective field of vision of about 12 feet so spotting land marks and reading maps will be more difficult than normal.

If any one would like to join Stewart for the whole weekend, or sections of the ride they are more than welcome, however as this is a sponsored ride for Stewart we are therefore on a schedule, so although this should be a nice enjoyable ride, we will ride at our own pace (expected to be around 11mph) and as such we will not be waiting for people to catch up. Obviously, time allowing we will stop for mechanicals if we can (as we have allowed time for our own problems) but cannot promise to wait. People are therefore responsible for themselves. There is a pretty good rail network all along the coast so getting to towns and or home should not be an issue.

Nev from BCR Bikes will be supporting Stewart for the whole of the ride acting as navigator, mechanic and companion.

Our first meeting point will be at the bottom of Poverest Road, Orpington on Friday at 0800 from here we will start our journey to Hastings, where we will be camping at Hastings touring park, Barley Lane, Hastings, East Sussex, TN35 5DX

We will depart Hastings at 0800 on Saturday heading towards Rye where we will stop for breakfast. People wishing to ride with us are welcome to join us at the campsite or in Rye at 0930.

Then we will head round the coast. Our next camp stop will be at Little Satmar holiday park, Winehouse lane, Capel-le-ferne, Folkestone, Kent,
CT18 7JF

We will be leaving again at 0800 and having breakfast in Dover. If anyone wants to ride with us on Sunday you can meet us at the campsite at 0800 or Dover at 0930

We will be heading round the coast through Deal, Ramsgate, Broadstairs and on to Herne Bay where will camp at:
Braggs lane caravan and camping site, Braggs lane, Herne bay, Kent, CT6 7NP

Monday see's us leaving earlier at 0600 and heading back to london with a diversion to Mottingham where Stewart can earn a well deserved rest while Nev has a class to teach and then its on to Westminster.

Anyone wishing to join us for the last leg should get in touch and we can meet near Mottingham at 1830 for the final stretch to Westminster Abbey.

Thank you, in anticipation, for your support.

Brockley Farmers Market Ride
Saturday, 08 October 2011 @ Bromley South Station

09:15 (sharp ) departure from Bromley South Station – so plan to arrive a bit earlier ...for this medium paced ride to the brand new Brockley Food Market : http://www.brockleymarket.com/ - which opens at 10:00 , so I want us to be amongst the first there ...as it's getting rather popular!
The route is all along quiet roads or cycle paths and will not be overly taxing .....albeit , if you go mad shopping at the market ...the return journey could be a great deal more difficult ...panniers loaded up with finest English cheese , Kentish sausages and chickens , Norfolk lamb , Kentish game , freshly baked artisan bread from Brockley ( some of the loaves are huge !) , organic vegetables , snacks etc... You can get tea and coffee as well . I would anticipate being at the market for 30 minutes or so ...and then pootling back to Bromley – should be back there by 11:30 - about 14 miles in total
PS – it might be an idea to bring along some small freezer blocks if you are bringing back meat or fish .

The No idea Adventure!
Sunday, 18 September 2011

Tomorrows ride will depart from Norman Park at 10.30am.

The theme of tomorrows ride is "Adventure" as it is being led by Stephen and Paula.

The ride will try and follow our usual Cycle for Life 30 format, however it could be more than 30 miles or less than 30 miles, it could be hilly or it could be flat thats all part of the adventure. As for speed we will aim for a nice leisurely pace, but going downhill could get a bit fast, for those that know Stephen and Paula this description will make total sense. All joking aside the ride will be suitable for all types of bikes, however those with road bikes can be assured that we will not be going down any bridle paths or off road trails.

The general plan is to head out towards London, possibly through Greenwich, we may decide to take the ferry at Woolwich, or we can head along the river path to Central London, there will be plenty of stops for tea and cake along the way - we plan to be quite flexible on the route and can be open to bribes along the way if anyone knows any good cake stops and is willing to buy the ride leaders a cake or a pint!!

We hope that you will join us on our adventure tomorrow, we aim to be back in the Bromley area around 4:30pm, however if you wish you can always bail along the way!

Ride Leaders tomorrow: Stephen and Paula (07850 261361)

Well, it's that time of year again and we are ready to make this year the biggest yet. Once again there will be two led rides into London to join the 2011 Skyride. These will leave from Bromley South Station and Crystal Palace (outside the Cafe, Penge West entrance of the park). We will meet up slightly earlier this year to ensure the Dr. Bikes have enough time to check over the bikes before the start and for registration. This is a relatively slow, flattish ride up to London, due to the numbers involved, so please join us. Any children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult and must be competent on the road and capable of a ten mile road ride to London. Watch this space for further details or contact Spencer Harradine 07958 693518
DON'T FORGET TO PUMP UP YOUR TYRES, BRING A SPARE INNER TUBE, PLENTY OF WATER TO DRINK, MAYBE A SNACK, WATERPROOF JACKET AND MONEY FOR A TRAIN HOME IN CASE YOU CHOOSE THAT OPTION.

Setting off from Billinghurst, we will ride west and close to the river Arun, towards Midhurst, then ride north through more open attractive country. Eventually we may stray into neighboring Surrey, but we will, as always, stop at a traditional hostelry for lunch before gradually heading back to Billinghurst, arriving by late afternoon. Local cycle group meeting
Friday, 26 August 2011 @ Outside Bromley North Station

Hello,

My name is Collette and I am an intern working for the Green party at City Hall. Jenny Jones, Green Group London assembly member, is doing various cycle visits to outer London Borough's to investigate how cycling can be improved within them. We have been meeting local cycling groups to chat to (and to help guide us along the way!)

We will be headed to Bromley on Friday August 26th and I was wondering whether any Bromley cyclists would be able to come and meet up with us. It would be a really great opportunity to voice any cycle issues that you may have. We will be meeting outside Bromley North Rail station at 2.30pm and will be lugging our bikes along with us so we can cycle to any places anybody has particular gripes with. I understand that this is short notice and an awkward time for most who have to be at work, but even meeting up with a few of you would be really beneficial for us. The visit will last for around an hour.

Please circulate this email to your cyclists or anybody else you think may be interested in coming along. Could I also please request that everybody who intends on coming please RSVP directly to this email address with a contact number for them, incase of any emergencies/delays etc.

Many Thanks, hope to see you soon!

Paula's Sponsored 100m Bike Ride to the IOW
Friday, 26 August 2011

Tomorrow (Friday 26th Aug) See’s Paula setting off on her 100 mile sponsored ride to the Isle of Wight.

As some of you may be aware over the past 3 years Paula Godman (an active member of Bromley Cyclists) has had a hard time of it, the good news though is that she has overcome all adversities that have come her way and is well on the road to recovery.

In adittion to cycling Paula is a keen diver and dispite the odds has achieved her PADI Open Water diving qualification with the help of the Scuba Trust. In attempt to raise awareness and highlight the support and help that the Scuba Trust provides to people with disabilities and illness Paula is attempting a sponsored ride to the Isle of Wight (approx 100 miles) to help raise funds to buy specialist diving equipment.

I’m sure that you will all wish Paula every success for the ride and if you would be so generous as to sponsor her all donations would be greatly received.

Please feel free to contact Paula on: Paula@BCRBikes.co.uk should you wish to sponsor her.

Wishing you all the best Paula – Bromley Cyclists.

This ride is predominantly for Bromley Cyclists who are marshalling the led rides up to London for the Skyride on Sunday 4th September. Fairly brisk ride to London and back, with a break at the Kings Arms for dinner and a pint.

Cycle 4 Life 30 - Olympic Park circular
Sunday, 21 August 2011 @ Norman Park Hook Farm Lane entrance

This weeks ride will be lead by Shaun. First we'll head out through mostly back roads to catch the Woolwich ferry, then head up along the Greenway to find some nice views of the Olympic Park, finding some lunch around there. On the way back we'll come down the Limehouse Cut and then head along to Tower Bridge to follow the SkyRide route back to Bromley. Total distance is about 35 mostly flat miles.

Folkestone – Dungeness Loop
Saturday, 20 August 2011 @ Orpington Station

Meet Orpington station at 08:00 for a return train to Folkestone. Cost if we buy Group Save in multiples of 4 is about £11.
The ride will take us along the way of the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway route to Dungeness. With a bit of luck the lighthouse will be open, well worth a visit!
Dungeness is a place of contrasts with lots of small “shack” type homes and a nuclear power station in the background, it’s really unique.
It’s also got more shingle than any other place I’ve ever been to !
The return ride will take us inland a little more to see the varying terrain of the Romney flats. Generally not too many hills but often some wind to make up for the lack of undulations.
Definitely an all day ride at around 60 miles. But as usual no-one will be left behind and of course we will be on the look out for Coffee / tea and cakes on route. Pub lunch or bring your own.

Cycle 4 Life 10 - Keston and around
Saturday, 13 August 2011 @ Norman Park Hook Farm Lane entrance

This week’s ride is another great chance to explore the countryside nearest to Bromley. Green fields, woodland, the occasional deer and a few hills of course but great views, quieter roads and a bit of traffic-free bridle path this week.

From Norman Park we head out to the nearest bit of green – Keston via Hayes Common. Then through Nash and a steady climb up. Once we’ve caught our breath, we join a bridle path and then the road again for a fun and sometimes fast descent back towards Keston and back to Norman Park.

The ride is suitable for any hybrid or ‘mountain’ bike but those with very narrow tyres or very small wheels my find the bridle path a challenge especially if it’s been raining a lot as the path may be muddy in places.
As always we will go at the pace of the slowest and have plenty of breaks. There are no cafés or shops so bring snacks and drinks with you.

Meeting Point : Bromley South Station Forecourt at 08:20 for the 08:39 direct service to Kearsney ( near Dover ) – ETA 10:21 ( This train originates from London Victoria – leaving there at 08:21 )

Today's ride will pass through deeply carved narrow valleys and over numerous small hills – with one or two large ones thrown in ...so not one for the inexperienced . Average pace will be about 8mph in the hills and 12mph on the flatter bits – not a fast pace , but steady and sure .
Overall mileage will be 54 miles and it will have 4000ft of ascent/descent ...so quite a lumpy ride!

We'll pass through places such as Alkham , Elham , Waltham and Shalmsford Street ...along the narrowest lanes that I can find – with a few sections of busier road that cannot be avoided .
Our lunch stop will be in Compasses Inn in Crundale : http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk/pub/canterbury/compasses.aspx , at around the 19 mile mark – so I'm hoping we'll be there by 1pm .

Post lunch I'll be looking to put in a Tea stop at the stately home of Belmont : http://www.belmont-house.org/tea-room/
Eventually we'll fetch up at Rainham Station for trains home – two an hour from here , hopefully by about 5:30 pm .

Return tickets should be bought to Kearsney .

Canary Wharf Explorer - Discover A Quiet Commuting Route
Saturday, 16 July 2011

Meeting Point: Bromley South Station Forecourt at 09:00 on Saturday 16th July.

Today's ride takes us to the Canary Wharf area and back by the quietest/safest route possible, including a part of the Waterlink Way – which, those of you who work there, may wish to repeat on a weekday. Once there we'll find somewhere for coffee/brunch (probably Mudchute Farm) and then make our way back.

A point to note is that the lifts are not currently working in the Greenwich Foot Tunnel – which means lugging bikes up and down stairs (they will be fixed by September).

I would anticipate being back by 1pm at the latest, the overall distance being 23 miles ( approx )... and the going being mainly flat (with a couple of bumps)

Cycle 4 Life 10
Saturday, 09 July 2011

This week’s ride is another great chance to explore the countryside nearest to Bromley. Green fields, woodland, a few hills of course but great views, quieter roads and a bit of traffic-free bridle path this week.

From Norman Park we head out to the nearest bit if green – Keston via Hayes. Then through Nash and a steady climb up. Once we’ve caught our breath, we join a bridle path and then the road again for a fun and sometimes fast descent back towards Keston and back to Norman Park.

The ride is suitable for any hybrid or ‘mountain’ bike but those with very narrow tyres or very small wheels my find the bridle path a challenge.

As always we will go at the pace of the slowest and have plenty of breaks.
